HOW TO FIT A ROLLER BLIND WITH HEADBOX INSIDE A RECESS
A headbox gives your roller blind a clean, finished appearance by concealing the roller and mechanism at the top of the window.
When fitting inside a window recess, the headbox sits neatly within the recess above the blind. This guide takes you through the process step by step, from positioning and securing the headbox through to fitting the blind and checking everything operates correctly.
BEFORE YOU START
Before you start, check that there is enough room within the window recess for the headbox and blind to sit comfortably without interfering with the window, handles or anything else within the recess.
You should also identify what you'll be fixing into. This could be timber, plasterboard, brick, concrete or another material, and the correct drill bit and fixings will depend on what you're drilling into.
Offer the headbox up into position before drilling anything. Check that it sits where you expect it to, is centred within the recess and has enough clearance for the blind to operate freely.
POSITION & MARK THE HEADBOX
Offer the headbox into position at the top of the window recess and make sure it is sitting centrally and correctly aligned.
Check that the headbox is level and that there is enough clearance around it for the blind to operate without catching the window, handles or frame.
Once you're happy with its position, use a pencil to clearly mark the fixing points ready for drilling.
Take your time at this stage. Getting the headbox positioned correctly will make the rest of the installation much easier.
DRILL THE FIXING HOLES
Remove the headbox and drill the marked fixing holes using the appropriate drill bit for what you're drilling into.
The type of fixing required will depend on the surface. Timber, plasterboard, brick and concrete can all require different screws, plugs or fixings, so make sure you're using something suitable for your particular installation.
Before moving on, check your fixing positions against the headbox again.
If you're unsure which fixings you need, it's always better to check before drilling.
SECURE THE HEADBOX
Lift the complete headbox back into position and line it up with the fixing holes you've prepared.
Securely fix the headbox in place using suitable screws and fixings. Before letting go, make sure it is firmly secured, level and sitting correctly within the recess.
Remember, the roller blind is already contained within the headbox, so once the headbox is securely fitted, the blind itself is in position.
Gently lower the blind a short distance to make sure it is hanging correctly before moving on.
FIT THE CHAIN SAFETY DEVICE
With the headbox and blind in position, check that the operating chain hangs correctly without twisting or catching.
Position the supplied chain safety device so that the chain is held correctly and can still run freely, then securely fix it in place using suitable fixings.
Raise and lower the blind slightly to check you're happy with the position of the chain and safety device.
The supplied chain safety device should always be fitted.
CHECK THE BLIND
Finally, slowly raise and lower the blind several times using the chain.
Check that the blind runs smoothly into and out of the headbox, hangs straight and clears the window, handles and surrounding recess.
Make sure the headbox remains securely fixed and that the chain moves freely through the safety device.
If everything is secure and operating smoothly, that's it — your headbox blind is fitted and ready to use.
