HOW TO FIT A ROLLER BLIND OUTSIDE A RECESS
Fitting a roller blind outside a window recess — sometimes called face fixing — allows the blind to sit in front of the opening rather than inside it.
This guide takes you through the process step by step, from positioning the blind and marking your brackets through to fitting the blind and checking everything operates correctly.
The same fitting method can also be used when installing one of our Whiteboard Printed Blinds over an existing wall-mounted whiteboard.
BEFORE YOU START
Before you start, check where the blind is going to sit and identify what you'll be fixing the brackets into. This could be timber, plasterboard, brick, concrete or another material, and the correct drill bit and fixings will depend on what you're drilling into.
For a window, make sure the blind will sit centrally over the recess with the required overlap on each side. If you're fitting over a whiteboard, check that the blind will comfortably cover the complete board when lowered.
It's worth checking everything carefully before you start drilling. Make sure you have the blind, both brackets and the chain safety device, and that you're happy with where everything will sit.
POSITION & MARK THE BRACKETS
Position each bracket above the window recess, making sure they're correctly aligned and level with each other. Check that the blind will sit centrally over the opening, with the required overlap on each side.
Once you're happy with the position, hold each bracket firmly in place and use a pencil to clearly mark the fixing holes.
Take a moment to check both bracket positions before you start drilling — getting them properly aligned at this stage makes everything else much easier.
DRILL & FIX THE BRACKETS
Drill the marked fixing holes using the appropriate drill bit for what you're drilling into.
Securely fix both brackets in position using suitable screws and fixings. Timber, plasterboard, brick and concrete can all require different fixings, so make sure you're using the right ones for your particular installation.
Before moving on, check that both brackets are firmly fixed and haven't moved out of alignment.
FIT THE ROLLER BLIND
With both brackets securely fitted, carefully lift the roller blind into position.
Each end of the roller fits into its corresponding bracket. Carefully locate the blind into the brackets, making sure both ends are properly seated and securely held in place before letting go.
The blind should fit without excessive force. If something doesn't look or feel right, don't force it. Check the bracket positions and make sure you're fitting each end of the roller into the correct bracket.
FIT THE CHAIN SAFETY DEVICE
With the blind in position, check that the chain hangs correctly and operates freely without twisting or catching.
Position the supplied chain safety device so that the chain is held correctly and can still run freely, then securely fix the device in place using suitable fixings.
Raise and lower the blind to check you're happy with the position of the chain and safety device.
CHECK THE BLIND
Finally, slowly raise and lower the blind several times using the chain.
Check that the blind runs smoothly, hangs straight and covers the window recess correctly. Make sure both brackets remain secure, the roller is properly located and the chain moves freely through the safety device.
If you're fitting the blind over a whiteboard, lower it fully and check that the complete whiteboard is covered as intended.
If everything is secure and operating smoothly, that's it — your blind is fitted and ready to use.
